Two 4K cameras – not one 4K camera and a compromise

Most two-channel dash cams pair a good 4K front camera with a 2K or 1080p rear, because a rear 4K sensor costs real money. The A229 Ultra uses the same flagship sensor front and rear, so both cameras record 4K at the same time. In practice that means the number plate on the car behind you is as readable as the one in front – which matters, because rear-end collisions, car park scrapes and tailgating are the incidents people actually need footage of.

Sony STARVIS 2 sensors with HDR on both channels

STARVIS 2 is Sony's automotive sensor range, built to pull detail out of low light. Being backside-illuminated with a large 1/1.8" sensor area, it gathers more light with less noise, so night footage is cleaner instead of grey and grainy. HDR running on both channels is what stops a bright sky washing out the car in front, or a dark interior hiding the road – the camera captures both ends of the exposure and combines them, which is how number plates stay readable in glare and at speed.

Supercapacitor instead of a lithium battery

A dash cam lives on a windscreen in full sun. Lithium cells swell, leak and lose capacity at those temperatures, and eventually kill the camera. The A229 Ultra uses a supercapacitor instead, rated from −20°C to 65°C, with no battery to degrade. If it ever gets hotter than it can tolerate, it pauses recording to protect itself and resumes once it has cooled – it protects the footage and itself rather than failing quietly.

Hardwired parking mode, with three ways to record

Wired to the fuse box with a VIOFO hardwire kit, the camera keeps watching while the car is off:

• Auto event detection – the camera stays idle until the G-sensor or motion detector triggers, then records the event (and keeps the moments before it)
• Time-lapse – one frame every second or two, hours of coverage for very little card space
• Low bitrate – continuous recording at reduced quality, so nothing is missed

The kit also monitors your battery voltage and shuts the camera down before it drops too far to start the car, so parking mode can't leave you with a flat battery.

Wi-Fi, app, GPS and voice

5GHz Wi-Fi transfers clips to your phone in seconds rather than minutes, so reviewing an incident is quick when it matters. The built-in GPS records your speed, route and the time on the footage itself – useful when an insurer or the police ask what happened and when. Voice control means you can lock a file by saying so, instead of taking a hand off the wheel to find a button.
